Both answers are incomplete. The truth about supplements versus whole foods isn't a binary choice, and treating it like one is costing people either money, results, or both.
Let's get into the actual nuance here — because there are real scenarios where a spinach salad beats any capsule on the market, and real scenarios where a supplement does something food simply can't replicate.
Why Whole Foods Win More Often Than We Admit

Creatine — no realistic food source. To get the performance-relevant dose of creatine (around 3-5 grams per day) from food, you'd need to eat close to two pounds of raw beef daily. Creatine monohydrate supplementation is one of the most evidence-backed interventions in sports nutrition, and it's essentially impossible to replicate through diet alone at therapeutic doses.
Magnesium in a depleted food supply. Modern agricultural practices have reduced the magnesium content of many foods compared to decades ago. Combined with the fact that most Americans aren't eating enough leafy greens, nuts, and seeds to begin with, magnesium deficiency is widespread. Supplementing magnesium glycinate or citrate is often more practical than overhauling an entire diet.
Targeted therapeutic doses. Sometimes the goal isn't just meeting baseline nutritional needs — it's achieving a specific physiological effect. High-dose vitamin C for immune support, berberine for blood sugar regulation, ashwagandha for cortisol management — these require concentrations you'd never reach through normal eating. Food is nutrition; supplements can be targeted tools.
The Scenarios That Actually Define Your Choice
Rather than picking a philosophical side, think about your situation in practical terms:
You're generally healthy and eating a varied, whole-food diet. Your supplement needs are probably minimal. A vitamin D supplement, maybe omega-3s if you're not a fish eater, and a magnesium supplement if you're not loading up on greens. That's a reasonable baseline for most adults.
