Contrary to popular belief, snacking can be a crucial part of a healthy diet. If you want to know how to boost metabolism, eating regularly is one of the top things on a short list. Known by some as a “6 meal eating plan,” regular snacking can be an integral part of a weight loss strategy.  Regularly consuming small meals can help boost metabolism and improve productivity.

Done incorrectly though, one can rapidly sabotage their weight loss goals.  It’s especially important for office workers, who are often forced to sit at a desk all day, to be careful to make sure that all your snacks are healthy snacks.

Having some kind of schedule or plan as to what you are going to snack on during the work day can go a long way toward helping you to keep it healthy. If you only think about what to munch on when suddenly surprised by the munchies, you may, more times than not, lose the battle of healthy eating to whatever happens to be available in the closest junk food vending machine.

Take the time to visit your local farmer’s market and pick out fresh, healthy snacks from local growers.  Then, keep those in your desk or office fridge to help stick to the plan.

Keeping your healthy snacks close at hand can also help you keep you on track. Sometimes hungers pangs can be so strong that they give us no time even to run out to our car to access our stash of nutritious food. If you keep a good selection of nutritious snacks right in one of the drawers of your desk, you may be less tempted by the unhealthy alternatives that surround you.

Foods prepared at home can be as straight forward as low calorie fruits or vegetables, or you can choose a high fat snack based on a healthy vegetable oil, which offers the advantage of greater satiety, which translates to longer lasting feelings of fullness.

Water is one of the healthiest snacks there is so be sure to fill up on plenty of it during the day. See if you can campaign to get healthy treats like fruit served at company meetings so that you are at least offered an option and don’t have to be constantly refusing the cookies and donuts.

Although some bagels and some cream cheeses are definitely healthier than others, ones made with natural ingredients can be filling, contain low amounts of calories, fat, and cholesterol, and keep you going during a busy day at the office.

Other classics include peanut butter spread on celery sticks or slices of apple can be both refreshing and healthy. It can also be very easy to prepare and eat and can be perfectly adjusted to your tastes with either less or more topping.

Yogurt is a delicious and healthy treat that is almost the perfect food for office snacking. If you need low-fat, low-calorie, or low-cholesterol options, there are plenty available in the yogurt section of the grocery store. If you want to spice things up a little, add nuts or fruit to your yogurt.

If you like variety and grabbing handfuls of things, try trail mix for a quick and easy office snack. Trail mix will provide you with tons of protein, fiber, and calcium along with lots of variety. Some trail mixes may contain candy though, so be sure to check the label.

By far the healthiest office snack of them all, however, is simple, natural, raw fruit or vegetables. Its easy to alleviate boredom with these foods by choosing unique fruits and vegetable, like cumquats or sweet potato snacks.  Use your imagination and go for a little variety.  These can be specially prepared in slices or salads or even just washed and eaten whole. Fruits and vegetables contain mountains of vitamins and minerals and will ensure that you stay healthy and well-fed.
